Make the Most Out of Labour Day Weekend 2015
With the US dollar at all-time highs, Canadians will be looking to get the most out of the Labour Day weekend, here at home.
The past few summer months have been some of the hottest in history, but as Labour Day Weekend approaches, we can’t help but think of the long winter months ahead of us. As you probably remember, last winter was one of the coldest in quite some time and forecasters are predicting an equally, if not colder winter coming up.
But that’s what Labour Day weekend is for. To make the most out of those last few rays of sun, and kick back with some friends and family. After all, the next holiday we get will be Thanksgiving, and that seems a little too far away.
However, with the US dollar at all-time highs, many of us may be scratching our heads, wondering what else there could be to do besides our usual visit down south?
But don’t worry! We have put together a list of activities to keep you busy this Labour day, here at home.
1. The Canadian International Air Show – Toronto, Ontario
For starters, there is the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto which has been going on for some time now. However, what’s special about Labour Day Weekend at the CNE, is the annual Canadian International Air Show.
It is guaranteed to be great family fun with thrilling performances by the Snowbirds, F-16 Fighting Falcons, and for true aircraft enthusiasts, there will be sightings of the Spitfire to celebrate its 75th anniversary. Shows will be happening all at 3pm and are free with admission to the CNE, so be sure to catch a glimpse.

2. The Annual Labour Day Classic – Various Locations
For the football lovers out there, we are still a few weeks away from the start of the NFL regular season. Luckily enough, we can get warmed up with some good old fashioned Canadian Football at the annual Labour Day Classic. This year we’ve got BC at Montreal, Winnipeg at Saskatchewan, Toronto at Hamilton, and Edmonton at Calgary throughout the day. Be a part of the festivities by heading down to the stadium and cheering loudly or throw a barbecue with some friends and enjoy the games. We’ve got Toronto all the way… any takers?

3. The Hot & Spicy Food Festival – Toronto, Ontario
If the weather isn’t hot enough for you, try checking out the 18th annual Hot & Spicy Food Festival held at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre. Not only will there be delicious spicy foods to try but there will also be live music, dance and street performances in addition to features from world renowned chefs.
For those familiar with the show Iron Chef, there will also be an International Iron Chef competition that will be sure to really turn up the heat on an already spicy event. Best of all, it is free to attend so if you’re in the neighbourhood, just show up and enjoy the fun.
4. Niagara Falls, – Ontario
Just short of the border, we arguably have the best view of Niagara Falls. In the area there are also many family-friendly attractions such as Ripley’s museum and a wide variety of restaurants to enjoy.
You can also expect Canada’s longest running fireworks show on Labour Day weekend which is always a delight to see. For the adults wanting to head down there, how could we forget Fallsview Casino Resort? For some high-stakes action or simply for some fun, Fallsview’s casino, live entertainment, and the surrounding nightlife hardly disappoint.
5. Shopping
For those who usually head down south during Labour Day weekend for a quick shop, you can be assured that most major malls in your area will be open for the most part of the day.
There will also likely be good deals and sales all around so be ready to cross some things off your shopping list and pick up some back to school items for your kids or for yourself!
