Travel Tips for Miami, Florida
World-famous for its beautiful weather and white, sandy beaches, Miami is your destination for the sun, culture, and great food.
The Beach
No trip to Miami would be complete without taking some time to soak in some rays on the beach. While there are plenty of beaches in South Florida, Miami Beach is the largest. Located on a barrier reef across from Biscayne Bay, it’s the premier weekend hangout for Miami residents and tourists. All of Miami’s beaches are close to shops, hip bars, and restaurants at various price points, so you can easily spend a whole day here.
Getting Around
When you arrive at Miami International Airport, you can find taxis on the lower level just outside of baggage claim. If you decide not to take a taxi, be aware that Miami public transportation is not as developed as in other large American cities and there are no subways in Miami due to the high waterline. If you are itching to get to the beach, there is the Airport Flyer (route 150), which is an express bus that runs between Miami Airport and Miami Beach for $2.35 USD.
Exchanging Money
As is usually the case when traveling, exchange for American dollars at your bank before leaving on your trip. But if you don’t have time, there are still options available other than airport kiosks (poor rates) and ATMs. At Knightsbridge Foreign Exchange, we provide quick, professional service and exchange rates that beat the banks!
Dining

Miami is a melting pot of cultures, so you can find just about anything to eat. The city is best known for Latin cuisine with Cuban food being especially popular, along with many South American restaurants.
Food to try in Miami: ceviche, Cuban mojo, stone crab claws, empanadas, frog legs and “gator bites” (Deep fried alligator).
If you’re a foodie, visit during Miami Spice, a restaurant festival that runs from August to September. Participating restaurants offer three-course meals that feature signature dishes prepared by world-class chefs at a reduced price; lunch will set you back $23, while dinner is around $39.
Staying Safe
Miami Airport has a bad reputation for baggage theft, so don’t pack any valuables in checked luggage. Keep your camera, computer, money, jewelry, and important documents in your carry-on bag.
Miami Beach, Brickell, Coral Gables, and Coconut Grove are safe neighborhoods, but you should still exercise caution. If you plan on roaming late at night, do so in a busier area. Late night walks on the beaches are not advised.
Miami’s nightclubs are a hot spot for theft, so don’t let your guard down and always make sure the bartender does not overcharge you when buying drinks with your credit card.
